What Is a Peripheral
Nerve Stimulator?

A peripheral nerve stimulator (PNS) is a small electrical device that uses mild currents to stimulate nerves in the body. A typical PNS consists of tiny electrodes that are placed under the skin near the target areas. The electrodes are connected to an implanted device that generates electrical pulses. Such stimulation changes nerve activity in the area to modulate pain signals and eliminate discomfort. Expert Care Center uses an advanced Curonix® Freedom PNS System, which is more convenient than standard PNS and requires a minimally invasive surgical procedure.

Our Innovative Curonix® Freedom PNS System

Curonix® offers a unique solution for chronic pain management through the Freedom PNS System. This minimally invasive technology utilizes a two-part design:
Electrodes are implanted near the targeted nerve, while a separate, rechargeable transmitter delivers power wirelessly through the skin and clothing. This eliminates the need for bulky implants and avoids battery-related complications. Curonix® Freedom PNS System allows for targeted pain relief in various body areas and could be a potential option for many patients.

Conditions We Can Address

Consultation & Preparation for
Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

Before implanting a Curonix® PNS, we schedule a consultation with Dr. Aram to determine if the patient is eligible for this procedure.
She reviews the patient’s medical history and prior treatments, examines the area of pain, and explains how peripheral nerve stimulation works.

If PNS is deemed suitable, additional preparation includes:

planning where to place the device for optimal pain coverage
checking for contraindications, such as infection or bleeding disorders
arranging a trial stimulation period to validate treatment effectiveness
Anesthesia
Implantation of the Curonix® Freedom PNS System is typically performed under local anesthesia to keep the patient comfortable. The injection site and surrounding area are numbed using a proper anesthetic. Patients remain awake and pain-free during the procedure.
Dr. Aram inserts temporary electrodes through a small skin incision to access the target nerve. Electrode leads are connected to an external device that delivers mild electrical pulses to the nerve. The leads are secured in place, and the patient goes home with the external stimulator to evaluate the efficacy of the therapy for a few days.
If the patient experiences a pain relief of 50% or more, we implant a permanent device to help them feel more comfortable and enjoy daily activities. The electrode array and receiver are inserted through small incisions under local anesthesia. They are secured near the target nerve and connected wirelessly to the external pulse generator. We program this device to deliver customized stimulation to the electrodes.
After recovery, the patient can control pain by placing the wearable controller over the receiver site. We instruct each person to wear the device on a thin layer of clothes and never on bare skin. The external transmitter communicates with the internal receiver via HI-EMC technology to start or stop stimulation as needed for proper pain relief. The stimulation parameters can be adjusted non-invasively to optimize therapy over time.
Patients may schedule an appointment with Dr. Aram to upgrade their devices to a newer version if needed. We can also reprogram the equipment to accommodate body changes.

PNS Implantation Procedure & Use

Recovery After PNS Implantation

The recovery period after PNS implantation is usually brief. This is an outpatient procedure, so people can go home on the same day. They may experience mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the implant site, which typically improves within a few days. Most patients can return to normal activity within 24-48 hours, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for around 4 weeks. Over-the-counter pain medications are often sufficient to manage any wound discomfort during recovery. Patients should keep the incision site clean and dry to prevent infection.

Candidates for Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

Candidates for PNS have one or several of the following characteristics:

Post-Surgical Chronic Pain

Patients suffering from chronic pain that is resistant to other treatments may be good candidates for peripheral nerve stimulation. It can help reduce discomfort and improve function.

Mononeuropathies

Patients with mononeuropathy (dysfunction of a single peripheral nerve) may benefit from PNS. This therapy can help reduce neuropathic pain and other symptoms stemming from that nerve.

Blood-Thinner Dependency

People who must take blood-thinning medications may be good candidates for peripheral nerve stimulation since the procedure involves less bleeding risk compared to complex surgeries.

Additional Diseases

Patients dealing with multiple health conditions along with chronic pain can benefit from PNS as a non-pharmacologic treatment that helps to avoid risky drug interactions.

Failed Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)

If spinal cord stimulation does not bring tangible results, we can
try targeting peripheral nerves with PNS as an alternative option
to reduce pain. In many cases, patients improve their symptoms significantly.

Successful Nerve Block

If a patient has responded well to a selective nerve block
and experienced significant relief, they may be suitable for a PNS implant. The positive blocking procedure suggests that the
targeted nerve is involved in pain signaling.

Successful Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation involves inserting a probe near a specific nerve and using heat to deactivate it. This treatment aims to interrupt pain signals to the brain or spinal cord. Patients who have experienced relief from previous RFA may achieve similar benefits from PNS.
