Neck Pain Q & A

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain is often due to injuries or degeneration of one or more of the cervical spinal discs, joints, or muscles in your neck.
Most pain that persist beyond 1-2 weeks are likely not to be due to muscle strain.
Muscle tightness or spasm is usually a symptom of something more serious going on in the spine. Both disc herniations and facet joint arthritis can cause muscle spasm or tightness. Disc herniations can also cause neurologic symptoms such as radiating pain or numbness/tingling into the arms and hands. At times headaches can also be due to spine disease in the neck.
Neck pain is most often due to these acute and degenerative musculoskeletal conditions, but in some cases, neck pain may be due to other causes, such as or meningitis to name a few. Although these are less likely causes of neck pain, it’s important to get an accurate diagnosis from Dr. Aram and her team for the best pain management.

How is neck pain diagnosed?

When you come to Expert Care Center, Dr. Aram goes over your medical history and current symptoms with you, then carries out a physical exam. She can tell a great deal from her examination of your neck, and seeing both how you respond to stimuli and the way you move your head gives her a good idea of what’s likely the cause of your neck pain.
After the physical exam, Dr. Aram orders diagnostic tests such as X-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI so she can view the internal structures of your neck and confirm the cause of your pain. Diagnostic imaging also helps Dr. Aram determine the extent of any damage or degeneration, and whether the problem is affecting any other tissues.

How is neck pain treated?

Dr. Aram begins by using conservative treatments such as Anti-inflammatory medications, ice/heat, and physical therapy. If you have already failed these conservative treatments or are unable to undergo physical therapy due to severe pain then Dr Aram with offer you interventional procedures aimed at treating the pain at its source.
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Facet joint steroid injection/Medial Nerve Blocks
  • Regenerative medicine techniques
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Spinal cord stimulator
